The city of Copenhagen is looking to add a temporary summer intervention to Saxogade, a street full of history. Located next to a school, the space is to be designed with teenage girls in mind. Because of the nature of the project, the intervention must be relatively easy to set up and take down. "On the Block" is designed around inclusivity and sensory engagement, shaping areas for rest, play, and connection. The project demonstrates how temporary interventions can foster belonging and empowerment in public environments.
Saxogade is shaped by a history of urban renewal and today’s community focused social enterprises.
analysis
Site analysis found thin sidewalks preventing people from walking together and limited barriers between pedestrians and vehicles. Contextually, the site is surrounded by a variety of restaurants, schools, and green space. There are no programmed night activities and Saxogade acts much like a through street instead of an area to sit and stay.

Tangram patterns guide users in creating arrangements while
providing the freedom for them to design their own space. The glowing blocks
are designed to be light enough to move, while still being sturdy enough to sit and climb on.
Sidewalk extensions will provide a better use of space while keeping pedestrians separated from the road. Cork foam mats will cover the built out area.
Wooden structures will provide bike parking while also providing
seating. The seating will be created with options to either face the street or the buildings.
